Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And POTS

I am not a healthcare provider. The information in this post is based on information I have researched for myself.

I have had Tachycardia (an abnormally rapid heart rate) for as long as I can remember. It has just recently gotten worse so I decided to do some research on possible causes. One thing I came across was that a good number of people that suffer from CFS also suffer from POTS.

What is POTS?

POTS stands for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. POTS is a condition that causes rapid increase in pulse upon standing or changing positions.

Common Symptoms of POTS

  • Dizzy or lightheadedness
  • Fainting or almost fainting
  • Heart Palpitations (noticeable heartbeat/feeling of racing heart)
  • Pain in the chest
  • shortness of breath
  • Shakiness
  • Excessive sweating

Studies have shown that people who suffer with CFS often exhibit orthostatic intolerance (intolerance to standing). The exact connection between the two conditions is still not known. One theory suggests that POTS and CFS both have a common inflammatory or immunological pathway. A study done in 1999 concluded that out of 25 patients with CFS 70% of them also had POTS. There have been other studies that have contradicted the previous study so it is still not a known fact.

These symptoms can be so very frustrating. A simple task such as folding laundry or doing the dishes can cause you to feel like you just ran a marathon. When I move from sitting on the couch to lying in bed it sometimes like my heart is going to beat out of my chest. Also after eating a meal I experience increased heart rate. This is said to be possibly caused by the blood flow rushing to your stomach to fuel digestion.

Since I have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I do also plan on asking my healthcare provider about the possibility of POTS as well.

POTS is still not a widely known condition as far as what causes it and how to treat it. If you have dealt with this condition I would love to hear your experience. Feel free to comment below with your stories. I believe if this topic can be better understood, people like us might be able to find some relief or at least not be so misunderstood and assumed to just be “lazy” or “anxious”.

Take care of yourself and always follow your instincts when it comes to your health!

  1. I’m sorry you’re struggling with all this! I’ve had all sorts of crazy symptoms (discovered it was from from mold/chronic Lyme) and although I’m deep into my healing journey I still am borderline CFS. I totally identify with those symptoms!

  2. Definitely bring it up to your doctor! Your experience sounds like mine and I’m diagnosed with POTS. Hot showers, bending down, and lifting my arms trigger my symptoms too 😩
