What is the SI Joint?
The Sacroiliac joint (also known as the SI Joint) is the joint that connects the sacrum and ilium bones in the pelvis. This joint is a common source of lower back pain. The purpose of the SI Joint is to transfer the weight from your upper body to your lower limbs. It also provides stability and is the connection between the spine and pelvis. It is one of the largest joints in the body and has limited movement. When you are hypermobile, this poses problems as far as stability and pain.

What Causes SI Joint Pain To Flare Up?
- Physical activity that causes more stress on the lower back and pelvic area
- Poor posture or lack of motion
- Trauma such as an injury
- Pregnancy
- Different types of arthritis
- Too much movement in the SI Joint
- Prolonged standing
Ways to reset the SI Joint?
- Inner thigh squeezing exercise (some of my favorites are clamshells. Add resistance bands for increased difficulty)
- Heat therapy
- Bridge pose (yoga for the lower back has been very helpful for me
- Foam roller (This is my ABSOLUTE favorite. I look up foam rolling for lower back pain on Youtube.)
Yoga with Adriene on YouTube has been tremendously helpful. She has several practices for lower back pain. I also utilize the foam roller almost daily. Some other things I like are resistance bands to help strengthen that area, trigger point balls and a massage gun. Of course a good old fashion heating pad is a must. I will include some of my favorite products below.
SI Joint pain is one of the most annoying and painful conditions I deal with related to being hypermobile. Luckily there are things that can help ease the pain and strengthen that area over time. It is definitely a process.
