Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. All of the information in this post is from research I have done myself.
Our mamas and grandmas always told us if we were in pain or sick, soak in a hot bath. I never really put too much thought into it until I developed chronic pain.
Medical research has actually shown there are some pretty great medical benefits of hot water.
What are some benefits of soaking in hot water?
- Thermotherapy-this is also referred to as “passive heating.” A health article posted in 2020 states that passive heating temporarily raises core body temperature. This can have a positive effect on glycemic control, cardiovascular health, and can help lower over all body inflammation.
- May provide a number of the same cardiovascular benefits as going for a run. (Skip the run and soak in a tub? I’ll take it!)
- Speeds up muscle recovery by stimulating the muscular growth protein.
- Reduces muscle soreness.
- Increase the refueling of muscles.
- Water immersion often seems to increase a certain chemical in our brain called brain-derived neurotrophic. It also decreases the stress hormone in our bodies called cortisol. Makes us smarter AND helps relieve stress? I’m all in for that 🤣
- Possibly shown to reduce the risk of dementia.
- Temporarily lowers blood pressure. Heat causes your blood vessels to dilate which makes blood flow through your veins easier.
- Decreases depression.
- Improves the quality of sleep.
If that’s not reason enough to soak in a hot tub or a hot bath, I don’t know what is!
Of course I know hot tubs are not cheap. My husband and I saved up for over 5 years to be able to finally invest in ours.
Soaking in a hot bath tub is of course an amazing alternative. Especially if you add some aromatherapy bath bombs, or Epsom salt.
Light some candles, turn on some soothing music, and soak the pain away!
Below I have included some links to products that I absolutely love to go alongside my hot tub or hot bath therapy!
